As She Unfolds is the first chapter of Still, We Continue, a three-stage project by Canvas of The Heart in collaboration with Kay Lai Studio. The project combines black-and-white portraiture with recorded conversations. Taking Erik Erikson’s eight-stage theory of psychosocial development as a conceptual point of departure, the project initially presents sixteen participants in two independent chapters: eight women in As She Unfolds and eight men in As He Unfolds. In its final stage, all sixteen portraits and recorded conversations will be brought together in the physical exhibition Still, We Continue.
Each participant responds to the same central question:
At this stage of your life, what is your biggest struggle?
The first chapter brings together eight women at different stages of life. They are not asked to define womanhood or represent a universal female experience. Instead, the chapter gives each participant the time and space to speak from her own experience.
As She Unfolds considers how experiences of struggle may be shaped by age, personal history, and the expectations placed upon women. These expectations may change over time, yet they may also accumulate: how a woman should appear or behave; when she is encouraged to speak or expected to accommodate others; how she negotiates ambition, independence, relationships, care, family, and responsibility; and how her value is perceived as her body, social position, and roles change.
From girlhood and adolescence through adulthood and later life, these pressures may take different forms: academic and family expectations; appearance, acceptance, and belonging; professional ambition alongside partnership, motherhood, and care for others; and changing relationships with visibility, independence, the body, and roles within family, work, and community that may have shaped her identity and sense of purpose.
These conditions do not shape every woman in the same way but form part of the context within which individual lives are understood. The youngest participant reminds us that youth does not diminish the reality of present difficulty; the older participants offer perspectives that may emerge from having lived beyond experiences that once appeared permanent.
By giving sustained attention to the struggle each participant describes, As She Unfolds conveys its full weight in the present while making clear that no single difficulty can define the whole of a life or determine what remains possible.
